The recent development during the last decades of the spanish marine aquaculture has been a
consequence of the traditional comsuption of fish and fishery products up to the point of constituting an strategic sector in Spain.. To the initial production of mussels and trout, the sea bream, turbot and sea bass and more than 20 other species now in different stages of R+D have followed. However, the development of the culture of these species have been faster than the knowledge of its molecular biology as compared with other grown species. The study of its molecular biology, genomics and proteomics and of those other model species will precede a better use of these technologies, so that it will be convinient to intensify focused research. Further to their use as human food, other applications are the use of fish species as human genetic disease models, to detect contamination and as biofactories for pharmaceutical products. The National Plan of R+D+I (2000-2003) and the strategic INIA plan for 2001-2003 already put emphasis to potentiate the development of these posibilities, however the researches have yet to take advantage of these politics.
